Author's Guideline

Guidelines for articles

Authors should follow these guidelines in preparing articles for submission:

 a)  Your paper should be double-spaced on A4 paper in Times New Roman 12 pt. Please do not use headers or footers (page numbers, logos, footnotes, etc.).

b)  Send your text as an email attachment to newsletter@kazaelt.kz as a Microsoft Word document.

c)  Start with the article title, your name, biography, article text, your email and postal address.

d)  The editor reserves the right to modify your paper for length, clarity or grammatical accuracy.

Length: Your paper can be up to 1700 words, including no more than 5 references. In general, a two-page spread with two or three pictures contains around 1200−1300 words of text.

Titles, headings and subheadings: These should be written in sentence case, i.e. capital letters only for the first word and for names of people and places. Please do not use more than three levels of headings and subheadings.

Illustrations: Please number each diagram, chart, etc. and indicate clearly where each one is to appear. Illustrations should be sent via email attachment and formatted as JPEG or TIFF (Hi-res) files. Please ensure that you have the permission of any individuals who appear in your photos and that you can reference the origins of the photo – we cannot include photos for which copyright is not clear.

Style: You should try to make your article as clear to read as possible and avoid all language that may be offensive to others (e.g. sexist, racist and other such terms).

Factual information: Please get your facts straight. If you're not sure, check. If you can't find out, leave it out. Printed material containing factual inaccuracies is potentially dishonest and possibly libelous, reflecting badly on both you and on KazAELT.

Special symbols: If you need phonetic or other symbols and cannot print them in your text, please write them as clearly as possible in a scanned hard copy version so that we can type them for you.

Biography/photo: At the top of the article, please include not more than 40 words about where you work, your experience and/or qualifications, areas of interest or research and anything else of relevance. We also require a colour photo.

Acronyms and abbreviations: Please spell these out in full the first time, followed by the acronym in brackets.

References: References should use APA style. Please ensure that all works mentioned in the text also appear in the list of references. An example of APA (in this case, a book) is as follows:

Agar, M. (1994). Language shock: Understanding the culture of conversation. New York: Perennial.

For more information on using APA, please refer to this link: https://apastyle.apa.org/index

Legal: We assume that your article/review has neither been previously published, nor is being considered for publication elsewhere. If we wish to reprint, we need to know where the article was first published and what permission you have obtained.

Ready to Use Techniques

"Ready to Use Techniques" Submissions

Ready to Use Techniques is our special section that offers English teachers the opportunity to share successful classroom practices.

Content

Each Ready to Use Techniques article should focus on a single successful teaching method employed by the author. Topics can range from simple warm-up activities to more extended projects, covering various aspects of language teaching.

Authors should provide a brief explanation of where and how they implemented the teaching technique. This includes details such as location, information about learners or the course, and the rationale behind choosing that method. This contextual information is crucial to give readers a background and a starting point.

While authors can share personal experiences with the teaching technique, the primary goal of the article is to guide and assist other teachers in implementing the technique in their classrooms.

Length

Compose Techniques for EFL Teachers as a concise article. Authors may choose to break down the technique into distinct steps presented within the article. Articles should aim for a word count ranging from approximately 500 to 1700 words.

References

While it's not mandatory to include text citations and references, acknowledgment is necessary if the technique is inspired by another source. If citations and references are included, follow the writing style of the APA Style guide.

Handouts and Graphics

Ensure that any accompanying handouts are generic, avoiding specific details such as terms in the author's students' first language, names of places or people in the author's school or town. Since many readers may not have access to photocopying, suggest alternatives, such as drawing a simple handout on the board. Any graphics, figures, text boxes, etc., must be the author's original work.

General Pointers

1. Submissions should not have been previously published.

2. Ensure that your technique does not closely resemble Lesson Plans, Classroom Activities, or Ready to Use Techniques from previous ELT Kazakhstan issues.

3. Generally, favor a simple and straightforward explanation over a complex one.

4. Include an estimated time required for implementing your technique.

5. Consider the time constraints of Techniques for EFL Teachers readers; if materials need preparation, suggest ways to involve students in the process.

6. Aim to make Ready to Use Techniques beneficial for less-experienced teachers by providing clear and spelled-out procedures. Consider using imperative language for instructions.

7. Include a title for your article.

8. Provide a concise one-sentence biography for each author.

9. Submit your work as email attachment with "Ready to Use Techniques" in the subject line.
